Web Analysis
The department of psychology at the University of Texas at El Paso was founded in 1965, it's Ph. D. program was founded much later in 1993. Nevertheless, its slow development does not fail to suffice the incoming student with the opportunity of procuring a baccalaureate in Liberal Arts and or Science, A Masters in Liberal Arts and the Ph. D. With these Graduate and undergraduate programs there is an obvious push towards research. This can be seen on the web site of the College of Psychology yet, it is practiced by the graduate students. For example Jennifer Taylor perspective Ph. D. at the end of the 09-10 semester is currently working on object recognition under Dr. Cooper. Patti Fernandez is working on a correlation of health to health education of colon rectal cancer under Dr. Morera. Both Taylor and Fernandez are ready to accept undergraduate students for undergraduate research. Yet, how does one get to the resources of the college of psychology? One way would be for there to be an accessible web site that is also user friendly.
Nevertheless, when I started attending UTEP there was no search for the right college nor was there anything that pushed me towards psychology. All I knew was that there was an influx of engineering majors and I did not want to fall into that mold. In the end I did what most students do; which was to hit and miss until I found something of interest to me. That field was psychology and was my choice only because of the want to attend Medical school. Yet, now with the knowledge of rhetorical appeals and rhetorical situations it is apparent to me that the department of Psychology has a lot more to offer than a pathway to Medical school. Thus, to obtain the knowledge of what a college has to offer one must look into its literature. This being a website; I will create a web analysis with Rhetoric appeals and rhetorical situations to see if the statement of them being committed to excellences in the fields of teaching and research holds the validity of which it is so assumed to have.
Rhetoric and Rhetorical Situation “The art of speaking suitably upon any subject.” (john Kirkby, A New English Grammar 1746) Better yet, rhetoric is the application of ethos, pathos and logos. This stile of communication is found in every peace of literature this including the web sites of the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas at El Paso. However, the Rhetorical 22situation consist of subject, purpose and audience. It is with this that the department of Psychology targets its main audience of the college, the prospective students of UTEP.
When coming across the web site we see the welcoming face of Dr. Castaneda the department chair. Also there is the opening statement which starts off with, “The Department of Psychology welcomes you.” Nevertheless, ethos of ones literature is now not only subjected to writing. As defined by Apple Inc's application Dictionary, “ Ethos; the characteristic spirit of a culture.”
We are committed to excellence in teaching and research and are proud of the accomplishments of our faculty, students, and graduates. We are a research oriented department where our priority is the discovery of new knowledge and understandings of the individual and their behavior, the application of that knowledge to the betterment of physical, mental, and social health, and the transmission of that knowledge to our students and the community.
There are many factors that play a roll in what we feel as we read. These factors are summed up in Situations and Appeals of Rhetoric. When analyzing the opening paragraph there are many unique incorporations of the rhetorical appeals. Ethos the credibility of the whole web site is thought to exist as it is written by the Department. Pathos, the use of emotion to draw in the reader can best be seen with the statement that knowledge which is gained in the department will be transmitted to the minds of the student, makes them a primary focus. Also, this paragraph includes the principle of reason and judgment called logos. “Our priority is the discovery of new knowledge and understandings of the individuals and their behavior” ()
Yet, why was this written, who was it for and is it a statement of non-applicable knowledge? I have never seen a body of people outside of a creed to follow one belief as if it was to be decreed from a higher power. The conviction is Research, and; as the pinnacle of the whole discipline there are no references to job opportunities. Nor is there any one, with in the department who can say they procured their B.A. or B.S. and moved on with their lives. The web site consist of Quick Facts, Mission Statement, People, Undergraduate Programs, Graduate Programs, Research and a contact tab. Just like the Graduate Program which consist of the Fields for Ph. D. and Masters in Clinical or Experimental the undergraduate program has a push for internships or research. The undergraduate program in the department does not consist of trials of knowledge, strengths and determination. It is simple and almost lends its self to the apathy of the student. However, with in the undergraduate program there are available research positions and an area where one can go to inform them selves on Honor Thesis. Also, as experienced in the area of undergraduate research it is relatively easy to be published as and undergraduate in the department of psychology. Yet, no where have i seen such a poor and loosely grouped degree plan for the students. However, with the ability to easily procure publication it is as if the department pushes towards Graduate school or any other career in uses of a vita.
Where does one go after college? It is assumed that after educating an individual he is fit to find a career. It is to my experience with the ones i have encountered that it is almost impossible to take Psychology with a frivolous mind set. The department does not lend a helping hand in looking for a career nor is it any clearer to the students on what can be done with this degree. The web page has clearly outlined its Rhetorical situations of subject, purpose and audience. And they are as follows: the subject is tied to Research and what can be obtained by it when all who attend the university comply. The Purpose of the website is to inform the audience that the department is solely a research based discipline who’s overall goal is to better the surrounding community with the fruits of its labor. And the audience is not the quintessential student who goes to school and home; but, the one who stays and applies him self to countless hours in the research lab writing and reading.
*/note the eight quotes are still not included and i still do not have my citation page/*
post scrip all will be done in due time

It is here were the web site applies to the interest of the student. I is almost the goal of every student to become a part of something greater, and; the above text does its job. Further in the website this statement couldn't be any more true. Because not only do they provide the students with a list of faculty research, labs pertaining to research, dissertations, master thesis, senior and honors thesis and a page on Undergraduate research. They also post the published works of their faculty on the main entrance of the College. Such posting include Dr. Moss who is the creator of the, “Sulfonyl fluorides for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease” U. S. Patent Serial NO. 5 798392.
The website purpose is primarily informative; besides discussing who works there and what is going on in the college of Psychology. It informs the student on the major goal of the college, research. Unlike the other schools the department of psychology does not mention job opportunity or much information on the careers available to psychology majors. You may say that the primary audience that they are striving to attract are the students who's main goal is to continue onto Graduate School or Medical School.

Chapter five
Ethics in the technical workplace.
Ethics here is defined as, “A systemof moral, social, or cultural values that govern the conduct of anindividual or community.” (Sheehan, p. 92) Yet, can ethics be sosimple to define? I think not, from political sciences there arethree forms of morality. First being Moral is the acceptance of whatone has done. Amoral is the blindness following or actions that onedoes due to ignorance; and, immoral is the refusal to accept thesocial norm of what should be done. *1 Nevertheless after the bookhas defined ethics it goes on to tell us about personal, social andconversational ethics. In all reality the book shows thein-importance of personal ethics and skips to social ethics. It ishere in this explanation were the Declaration of Independences isbrought in and quotes the unalienable rights. I find this to bedisrespectful reason being in my explanation of the following.
When in the Course of human events itbecomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bandswhich have connected them with another and to assume among the powersof the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws ofNature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to theopinion of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. (Declaration of Independence)
It is here were the founding fathersexplain that when the rights of said individuals are abused they asrational people will separate from the abuser. Also, that because oftheir rationality they are almost obligated to explain why they areseparating. Thus the explanation of the Declaration of Independencesin the book is incorrect because it should only be referenced or usedwhen a governing body is abusing rights under absolute Despotism*2(The Declaration of Independence).
Now moving on the book explainsjustice, utility and care as falling under Social Ethics. The overall explanation of this is that we should take into considerationcompassion, law and the greater good. How Dr. Gutierrez woulddefined this, “Politics the reconciliation of our differences,”which means how can I get you to like me.
This book goes too much in to theexplanation of what ethics is. However, I believe that the overallmessage is politics. We must always take into consideration whatpeople will feel about what we say. And, we have to come to termsthat every one does what benefit them; like Thrasymachus said,“Because people are estranged in essence, people with power willconsequently seek their own good and readily sacrifice the well fairof others” (A Novel Approach to Politics, Dr. Van Belle, Mash).
Now when I say politics I don’t meanthe election politics I mean the reconciliation of each othersdifferences. It is the most noble discipline when it comes to socialinteraction. That is the overall message of this chapter.
*1 Morality explanation—Oh yes thisis not cited because it is now common knowledge due to the fact thatit has been two years since I have taken political science and yeah Idid sell my book so.....yeah.
*2 Despotism---this is a noun and itsdefinition is, “in a cruel and oppressive way” (MacintoshDictionary)

It seems to me as if my creativewriting class has regressed from the college level. So today I read achapter on how to create a paper. Better yet, ill give you theactual title it is, “Organizing and Drafting.” Maybe it is myfault for assuming; after all, you know what they say, “if youassume you make an ass out of you and me.” Nevertheless I havefound some use for this chapter. I have forgotten the the truthabout the majority of the world; also, that I fall within the mean ofthat as well. We don’t listen to the CNN or read the New YorkTimes. We are people that must always be reminded on how to producethe most common. It is my belief that chapter eight has done this. For example if we reference page 176 there will be and explanation ongenres. Which I know that I fall victim to forgetting the type ofpaper that I should be accustom to writing. Now no matter what typeof paper you are writing weather it is an Analytical report of apaper of Procedures. Organizing and Drafting or page 182 of thisbook always proves to be the best way of going about the writingprocess. It is interesting how going back to the basics makes youaware of how little you may know. Thus I conclude that this chapterhas been the most useful part of the book and this is only to myforgetfulness.

It has come back to my attention that we are not learning to communicate with other professionals nor communicate with lower educated individuals. What this chapter consist of is the four levels of editing which consist of Revision, Substantive editing, Copy-and-Editing and Proofreading (pg306). Now this is odd to me; because, I think I remember going over this in my previous two English basic courses. There is also a recurring hint of the cross-cultural aspect of writing. Like I have stated before it should not be the duty of the professor nor of this class to educate us on something we might; or better yet, will almost never come into contact with. I would like to bring to the attention of the read a quote by Dr. Saleh author of Topics in Study of Life ‘Laboratory Manual’ first edition.
“No matter what you are writing, you should always know who your audience is so you can write in the way that best communicates with that audience….Your instructor wants to evaluate how well you can communicate your background knowledge and all the components of your investigation to a wider audience, so don’t assume that your reader knows as much as your instructor about your investigation. “ (Dr. Saleh, pg B-1)
It is obvious to me that this quote explains the important of communicating towards your audience. No matter what type of audience it is we should always take into consideration their cultural values; however, like I stated before this is not needed in this class. The quote above comes from Biology and there is also a similar one in Chemistry; also, let’s not forget that “audience accommodation,” was the main focus of our two required English courses. And, let’s not forget that the cross-cultural communication aspect brought to us in this book is a part of Political Science. So I now have a, question if we have learned this why are we learning it again? Or is it that I live in some kind of holistic dome where Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy and Sneezy are the only ones that care about their educational endeavors?
This chapter has been the end of me. It is a repetition of what we should be doing when it comes to our writing. Nevertheless, I guess it is the intent of the author to fix a failed attempt at conditioning the American population at a young age to care about what they have to say.

Instructions and Documentation chapter 20 is very interesting; it focuses on the three main types of documentation which are, instructions, Specification and Procedures/Protocols. Now when reading this chapter I came across the Instructions and Procedures example on page 552. I assumed it was the same as writing a research paper; nevertheless, I was wrong. As I finished this chapter I realized that it consists of writing, “how to pamphlets.” Not to be bashing on this chapter; yet, the day I go to school to procure a career in writing pamphlets is the day the world will end. I guess it would be safe to assume that the majority of science majors have been conditioned to write meticulously. Thus this form of writing is foreign to me; however, it is very informative I have learned a lot here. Yet, I would never be able to see myself writing like this or better yet I hope I would never have to write like this.

Creating a web site should be well thought out because many sites are not made for what you intend to use them. For many years I used My space as my personal blogger in writing about politics and any about the books I read. Yet, I quickly found out that no matter if the topics were only conveying my opinion the majority of individual would negate it with vulgarity. So I would suggest that in creating a web site carefully choose the right one that would best fit your needs. Now, in creating the web site there are many options one is Webs.com. This is a simple user friendly site and it is private thus if you are planning on posting your opinions don’t worry only those who wish to view them will. Now the process for creating the site is simple. On the web site there will be a virtual button that states create profile click there and that is it. The web site like I stated is user friendly and will guide you the rest of the way. The majority of other website are the same way.

The reader analysis chart is kind of confusing because of the fact that you must take into consideration the people who are going to be viewing your paper. So if I were to write on the harmful effects that coal has on the environment (electricity). Then my Primary reader would the United States Government. They secondary audience would be any health related professional and individuals in the health industry. The tertiary readers would be the reporters any anyone who comes into contact with the paper. Finally the Gatekeepers would be the citizens of this nation. Nevertheless, none of these readers will have similar needs values or attitudes. We can see this with the release of the Electric Vehicle 1 (EV1) back in 1995. The United States ended up banning all of the vehicles until a cleaner alternative was created. However, reporters and citizens of this nation still lobby for the release of an electric vehicle no matter of the harmful effects it has on the environment.
Thus when it comes to this chart I can only stress that it is foolish to create it because of the fact when it comes to sensitive topics we can never predict the needs values and attitude of our readers. This can be proven by reading the book “Who Killed the Electric Car” and also researching the controversy it produced once the electric car was taken away from the public. Just like Dr. Mash and Van Belle said the authors to “A Novel Approach to Politics” the citizen of this nation do not read Science Daily, The New York Times or watch CNN. And no matter the facts of a paper we will almost always be in negation of what is best for us. So I have outlined the readers for the Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and Gatekeepers; yet, to state their needs values and attitudes towards said paper would be once again ludicrous.
